U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has announced the investment of $32 million in grants awarded to 167 meat and poultry slaughter and processing facilities to support expanded capacity and efficiency through the Meat and Poultry Inspection Readiness Grant (MPIRG) program.
The agency is initiating several key activities to gather the data and information necessary to support future action and move closer to a 25% reduction in Salmonella illnesses.
The program will provide relief to farmworkers, meatpacking workers, and front-line grocery workers for expenses incurred due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Announcement comes as part of efforts to increase competition, level the playing field for family farmers and ranchers, and build a better food system.
