Michael Sloan, president of the American Association of Meat Processors (AAMP), has announced the appointment of two key staffers to represent the membership of the national non-profit meat trade association.
Marty Manion will serve as the executive director for the 1,400-member trade group, which represents small and very small meat and food processing companies and their related suppliers. He succeeds Dr. Jay Wenther, who served in that capacity for the past decade and is now director of meat technology for Handtmann, Inc., a major industry equipment manufacturer.
Manion brings 20 years of experience in association management and has served as executive director for Association Independent Management and has been the director of information technology and board services for the 27,000-member Pennsylvania Association of Realtors.
He is a graduate of Lycoming College and has earned the Certified Association Executive designation.
In his new capacity Manion will manage staff, budget, convention, member services, technology implementation, communications, strategic planning and overall operations of the Elizabethtown-based association, which next year will observe its 75th anniversary. He resides in Lewisberry, PA, with his wife Patti.
Sloan also reported that Christopher Young has joined the organization as outreach specialist. Young will have responsibility for food safety and inspection matters and will represent AAMP before federal, state and local agencies. In addition to being the association’s liaison to USDA, FDA and state meat inspection programs, Young will handle legislative and regulatory issues on worker safety, quality control, environmental and business management as well as production concerns for the membership.
Young is a 20-year veteran of the meat industry, having been involved with construction of Wild Bill’s Foods jerky production plant in Leola, PA, in addition to quality control and operations management. He also oversaw ham production for Berks Packing Company in Reading, PA. He and his wife Roxanne reside in East Petersburg, PA.
