The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a directive with new instructions to its inspectors that will better ensure the humane treatment and slaughter of livestock presented for processing at FSIS-inspected facilities.

The U.S. government has announced that it will buy a $40 million “bonus” purchase of chicken, on top of the chicken it normally buys for feeding programs, including soup kitchens and school lunches.

McNees Meats and Wholesale LLC., a North Branch, Mich., establishment is expanding its recall to include approximately 2,200 pounds of ground beef product that may be contaminated with E. coli O157: NM (non-motile), the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced. The company originally recalled 360 pounds of ground beef on August 9.
