Tri City Cheese and Meats, a Kawkawlin, Mich., establishment, is recalling approximately 271 pounds of Jalapeño Vienna sausage products because they are misbranded in that they contain monosodium glutamate (MSG), which is not declared on the label, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced.
The product subject to recall is "1- and 2.5-lb. Cryovac bags of "Troll Smokehouse Fully Cooked Jalapeño Vienna." The product subject to recall bears the establishment number "EST. 32015" inside the USDA mark of inspection. This product was produced Oct. 18, 2012 through Nov. 6, 2012, and packages have a sell by date of "12/17/12" through "01/03/12." The product was distributed to retail establishments in Michigan.
The problem was discovered by FSIS personnel during a routine label review. MSG is a sub-ingredient in the spice blend used to make the product, but it was not listed on the final product label. FSIS and the company have received no reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products.
