Sara Lee Corp., currently headquartered in Downers Grove, Ill., will be moving between 500 and 650 employees to Chicago by early 2013. The company will receive between $5 million and $6.5 million in city incentives to headquarter its meat business to 400 S. Jefferson St., announced Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
"This is a huge win for the City of Chicago, as Sara Lee Corporation has chosen the city to be the home of the new North American Meats company," Mayor Emanuel said, reports the Chicago Tribune. "The new company will bring these high-paying jobs to the city, as well as its first-class brands and leadership in this key sector."
The company was based in Chicago for more than 60 years before moving to Downers Grove in 2005 as part of a consolidation that pulled 1,000 employees from St. Louis, Cincinnati, Rolling Meadows and Chicago. The company is planning on splitting into two publicly traded companies in the first half of 2012. The tea business is expected to be headquartered in Europe.
