DENISON, Iowa – Workers at the Farmland pork plant in Denison, Iowa have voted to reject a contract offer from the company.

About 1,400 workers reportedly voted by more than 92 percent on Sunday to reject the proposal. The current contract expired at midnight.

Local 440 of the United Food and Commercial Workers union reportedly said that Farmland’s demands would have increase the workers’ share of health care coverage. A union spokesman said another sticking point was wages.

There was no immediate comment from the company, according to reports.

The Denison plant is by Farmland Foods of Kansas City, Mo., which is a subsidiary of Smithfield, Va.-based Smithfield Foods.
