Smithfield Foods has announced that it has invested $100 million in a new distribution operation in Tar Heel, N.C. which the company says will meet customer needs. WRAL News reports that the existing facility in Clayton County will be closed as the operations move to Tar Heel.

The new distribution center will employ about 250 people, according to Dennis Organ, senior vice president of supply chain and direct store delivery.

"While these necessary changes are difficult, we at Smithfield are committed to supporting Clayton facility employees through this transition by providing opportunities to apply for positions at the new Tar Heel location as well as other operations throughout the company," he said.
