Missouri has become the first state to pass a law that prohibits food manufacturers to use the word “meat” to describe a plant-based meat alternative product. The state law forbids "misrepresenting a product as meat that is not derived from harvested production livestock or poultry." Violators may be fined $1,000 and imprisoned for a year, reports USA Today.

The law has been challenged by the company that makes Tofurky, a tofu-based product. The company calls the law a violation of its First Amendment Rights.
