Food Lion Feeds and Smithfield Foods announced a partnership and donation of fresh and non-perishable food items to local families in Augusta, Ga. The donation, which is part of Food Lion’s and Smithfield’s shared mission to alleviate hunger and address food insecurity across the country, will take place Tuesday, April 11.
Together, Food Lion Feeds and Smithfield will provide 100 Easter meal bags containing an assortment of fresh and private-brand grocery items, and 100 Smithfield hams to local families. Each family has been pre-selected by Golden Harvest Food Bank, which serves more than 200,000 people who are food insecure across northeast Georgia and southwest South Carolina.
"Food Lion Feeds is proud to partner with Smithfield to help our neighbors in need," said Currie Dalton, director of operations for Food Lion’s Augusta, Ga., market. "We know some in our communities have to make tough choices every day when they are hungry and we want to help eliminate those choices, especially at Easter. This donation will provide much-needed nourishment to individuals across the city."
In addition to ham, each Easter meal bag includes sweet potatoes, green beans, corn, cornbread stuffing, carrots, brown gravy mix and more.
“At Smithfield, we feed people—it’s what we do,” said Dennis Pittman, senior director of hunger relief for Smithfield Foods. “We are honored to partner with Food Lion Feeds for this donation, which is part of our national Helping Hungry Homes® hunger-relief initiative. These meal packages will provide high-quality protein and support to many families in the Augusta, Ga., area who may have gone without this holiday weekend.”
The event, which will take place at the food bank located at 3310 Commerce Drive in Augusta, Georgia, is only open to those families pre-selected by the food bank. Food Lion Feeds is working toward its commitment to provide 500 million meals by the end of 2020. To date, the company has already donated more than 280 million meals.
