Undeclared allergen leads to barbecue recall

May 9, 2011
Butterfield Foods, a Noblesville, Ind., establishment is recalling approximately 285,100 pounds of barbecue beef, pork and chicken products because they contain an undeclared allergen, soy, which is not declared on the label.

The products subject to recall include cases and tubs of Texas-Style BBQ Sauce with Beef, Chicken and Pork, under the Butterfield Foods and Amish Classic brands, as well as aluminum trays of “Butterfield Foods Casino Rib Fingers In Sauce.” Each case bears the establishment number "P-6945" or "EST. 6945" inside the USDA mark of inspection. The products were produced between April 2, 2010 and May 5, 2011 and were distributed to retail establishments and restaurants in Indiana.
The problem was discovered by FSIS during a cross-referencing of labels as part of label verification by Agency inspection personnel. The problem occurred as a result of a change in product formulation by the company. FSIS and the company have received no reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products.
