U.S. House passes spending bill with E-Verify program

WASHINGTON – The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a large spending bill that includes $100 million funding for E-Verify through the end of fiscal 2009. 

The E-Verify program is used widely by the meat industry and many other industries to ensure employee eligibility to work in the U.S.

The Continuing Resolution (CR) will reportedly fund, but not reauthorize, the immigration enforcement program. The program still needs to be reauthorized by Congress, but reports said that could be postponed until next year.

The CR is being sent to the Senate where a vote and final passage is expected by Saturday.
